A Bit of JFK History

The History of the Showpiece in the JFK Lobby

In the late summer of 1993, JFK was hired by the property manager Lois Grunow Memorial Medical Center, located at 926 East McDowell Road in Phoenix. JFK in-turn teamed up with Lutz Engineering to provide a design-build option for replacing the existing electrical system. As the study was performed, it was found that the original service was installed in the early 1930s. Then again in the 1960s, an upgrade was made to install a new service and back feed this old service section.

The property manager accepted JFK’s proposal and the design-build began. As JFK continued the studies to prepare the new drawings for City approval, we learned the background of Winnie Ruth Judd, a former medical secretary employed at the Grunow Medical Clinic in Phoenix (aka Grunow Memorial Medical Center) who was found guilty of first-degree murder in a bizarre twisted story that came to be known to the media as the “Trunk Murders” and Judd as the “Trunk Murderess”.

After keeping the building in operation, JFK slowly brought up the new system. As a history buff, John Krecek thought the original service section was unique and he inquired about taking it off their hands. It sat in his storage yard for quite a few years until construction began of JFK’s current location in Gilbert.

During the design of the new office building, it was decided to use it as the backdrop of the lobby entrance area. It was delivered from storage to his personal shop at his home where his son, Brandon (age 14 at the time), helped to completely dismantle, refinish, and then reassemble it back together. It now sits in the current JFK Electrical Contracting office location where you will see it as you enter. To complete the project, JFK installed some low voltage controls which currently turns off and on all the lobby lighting.

Community

JFK is consistently demonstrating an unselfish commitment to working with others to create a collaborative culture with all our team members. Our integrity is upholding the highest ethical standards and promoting trust and respect. As leaders, we encourage everyone to rise above their challenges to work through adversity and inspire others to do the same. JFK’s President, John Krecek and his wife, Debra Krecek, have been deeply involved in community service within the Phoenix area for many years. They volunteer much of their time with Arizona Disabled Sports (AzDS), which is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing sports and recreation opportunities for individuals with all types of disabilities. When John served on the Arizona Builders Alliance Board as a Director, he suggested that the Phoenix Chapter start a volunteer day like what the Tucson Chapter was doing. This project was located at the Broadway Recreational Center in Mesa-Home base for AzDS.

When John Krecek served on the Arizona Builders Alliance Board as a Director, he suggested that the Phoenix Chapter start a volunteer day like what the Tucson Chapter was doing. A board member from Sundt Construction at the time, Eric Hedland, suggested that if John chairs the event that he should choose his selection for a non-profit. John chose Broadway Recreation Center in Mesa, which housed Arizona Disabled Sports. McCarthy Construction teamed up with John and spear-headed the HVAC Renovation. This project consisted of the replacing of the two swamp coolers with a chiller air conditioning system. The original project grew significantly having many companies from the Arizona Builders Alliance taking part. When the project was completed, the Broadway Recreation Center was completely painted, the terrazzo floors in the showers were refreshed and were made handicap accessible. In addition to all of the renovations, a check for $35,000 was also presented to Arizona Disabled Sports by the Arizona Builders Alliance to buy additional equipment for their programs.
